The Dodgers first baseman on Friday hit his 39th home run of the season, setting a new mark in the senior circuit. That surpasses by one the totals of Gary Sanchez and Wally Berger . It took Berger 55 games and Sanchez 59 games to reach the 21-homer mark. Bellinger, who was not called up until three weeks into the season, now has 21 home runs in his first 51 games. What have we done lately to pick up the players that left here .

Last season he hit .210 with 19 home runs in 144 games for a Dodgers team that set a franchise record with 111 wins.

A lot of those kinds of numbers match up with what Bellinger did his second season. In 2018, he had an .814 OPS, down from his rookie year and nowhere close to his 2019 numbers, but that year he was still good enough for 3.5 fWAR. The Cubs are attempting a quick retooling of their roster after saying goodbye to stars Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez in recent years. Bellinger provides them a solid glove in center while he attempts to recoup his value at the plate. Bellinger ventured into the free agent market a year early after he was non-tendered by the Dodgers following the 2022 season.

Potentially a couple of more significant signings but they’re not throwing $ mm + stupid money contracts. The Dodgers have some holes to plug and declining productivity/roster uncertainty. Make a few trades to use some of their minor league trade capital that they’ve built up, preferably on players that they can control beyond next season, and bring up a few prospects later in the season. Field a competitive team than can make the playoffs without really going for it on the spending front, then position yourself to make a better run in 2024.
You really have a beef with front office/owners if the Dodgers don’t freaking make the playoffs in one season after 10 consecutive years making the playoffs and 9 NL West titles and one WS title? If the Braves ever change their name, God I hope it’s to the Barves. Everytime a HR is hit everyone in the lower bowl gets slimed like on Double Dare. Hopefully more young athletes in the USA will see baseball as an opportunity again to make lots of money. A 1 year deal for an above average defensive CF with potential for an MVP type of bat and is only 27 years old. Hoping the cubs paid extra to get them a club option or 2.
Then he injured his shoulder celebrating during the 2020 postseason and we didn’t find out til the following spring that he messed up his shoulder pretty badly. The dude is so skinny, he doesn’t have the frame to sustain that violent swing . Plus now Harper does not swing nearly as violently. Landing in CHC makes sense for all involved, though. The Cubbies certainly have the money and probably aren’t going to compete next year anyway. If he returns to form, maybe he pushes the Cubs to WC contention.
His hard hit rate (38.1%) was up too, and he was barreling more balls in 2022. Bellinger had an average exit velocity (89.4 mph) in 2022 that was his highest since 2019, and he hit on the sweet spot more than in 2021 and the most often since 2019. The change in Bellinger’s foot placement was necessitated by his leg injury, suffered early in the 2021 season. It’s possible that if he is fully healthy again, Bellinger can fix his stance. And presumably, if he fixes his stance, he might start hitting like his old self again.
All of those players were subpar at the plate except for Morel, who is a natural infielder and produced poor defensive numbers on the grass. The Cubs have some intriguing outfield prospects that could fill this role in the long run, but Bellinger and Ian Happ are set to become free agents a year from now, meaning there’s plenty of long-term runway. Seiya Suzuki, who’s controlled through 2026, is the only outfielder penciled in for the long haul. Bellinger’s first homer Tuesday came against Miller, one of the best left-handed relievers in the majors. A star of the postseason last fall, Miller had not allowed a home run to anyone this season or an extra-base hit of any kind to a left-handed hitter.
He also received an invitation to that year's Home Run Derby, but turned it down in order to have a day off from baseball before the All-Star game. Belli has value in the field and on the basepaths but he has to reinvent his swing. Otherwise he’s a 1-2 WAR player at best and his next contract might be a minor league one. Despite those down years, Bellinger’s salary kept climbing for a few reasons. He reached arbitration for the first time going into 2020, on the heels of his MVP campaign, as a Super Two player.
